After inexcusable delays, we’ve got another Team of the Week for you. This week we’re taking a look at our resident overlord, bureaucrat and number-cruncher Justin Phillips and his squad, Giant Octopus.
After watching The League 11 years ago, future Commish Justin decided he wanted a piece of the action, so he founded the Bo Knows Fantasy Football League and his franchise, Giant Octopus. That first season spelled both success and ultimately failure for OCTO, two themes that have followed the team throughout its history. Justin made it to the Bo Bowl in the very first year of the league, only to fall to auto-drafter turned waiver-wire-guru and Michael Vick-forgiver Austin and the Pumaskulls.
It did not take long for OCTO to make it back to the top. In Season 3, Justin overcame a 0-4 start and ran the table on the way to a 10-4 regular season record, later defeating the reigning champion Eric to claim his first Bo Bowl. Giant Octopus would make it to the Bo Bowl two more times, falling short of the ultimate goal both times. That said, OCTO is undisputedly one of the best teams all-time in Bo Knows History.
Justin’s four Bo Bowl appearances are the most in the league (next TGIF with 3). Including up to week 8 of this season, OCTO is #1 in all-time points scored, and it’s not really close. OCTO has 16580.48 points scored, which is 700 more than the next team. Justin and Eric are currently tied for second in all-time wins with 77 (trailing PUMA’s 80 wins), further cementing a longstanding rivalry between the two teams.

Favorite NFL Team
It’s hard because Ashley is a big time Chargers fan so I obviously have a soft spot for them. That being said, being a fan of that team is pure suffering. I also like following the Vikings because my grandma’s whole family is from the area. I have some fond memories of the Rams when they were still in LA and it was exciting to see them come back. This is a nice excuse for me to track multiple teams throughout the season and root for the one I like.
Favorite OCTO Player of All-Time
I thought this might be tough, but it’s gotta be Gronk. It’s hard watching him lately, but back in the day just watching him absolutely destroy defenders 24/7 was amazing. You could pencil him in for at least a touchdown a week and he had weeks with a lot more. I’ve always liked having a top end TE which makes this season especially rough.
Draft Strategy
I’m another Value Guy, but I’ve been trying to grab the players I like. My most successful season was when I listened to my gut and paid what I had to to get my guys. That being said, I usually draft some high end RBs, most times a top end TE, and then try to grab value WRs and generally punt QB and IDP. I’ll usually stack my bench with more lotto tickets than bench depth.
Most Valuable Position on your Fantasy Team
Almost always running back. This is a hold over from when running backs were more valuable and there were more studs, but I always liked when you could pencil your stud RBs in for an easy 15 points. I always found that the top end WRs were a lot more volatile. On top of that I’ll almost always stash a lot of handcuffs on my bench, hoping to hit on at least one as the season goes on. You almost always need the depth and if not you’ve got a super valuable trade piece.
Bo Knows Rival(s)
It’s wild when you’ve been in the league this long, you have beef with a lot of teams. At different points the Boomers, Mega Shark, Shitty, Shenanihads, and especially TGIF. But after the last few years I gotta say that my rival is the co-commish, the Pumaskulls. We’ve faced off twice in the Bo Bowl now and I’ve lost both times. It hurts. I’m not sure when I’ll get the chance to take them down again but I’m definitely looking forward to it. We’ve played each other 16 times though, and I’ve won 10 of them so I’ve got something to be proud of.
Giant Octopus and the Dreadmetal Pumaskulls played their one regular season game in Week 5, with OCTO prevailing, 119.26-128.45.
