Although the Bo Knows Fantasy Football League has technically only been around since 2010, it really all started back in 1962. That was the year Bo Jackson graced the Earth and changed the world. The Bo Knows Fantasy Football League is dedicated to the greatest athlete of our youths, a two-sport athlete who also teamed up with Jordan and Gretzky to fight evil on the weekends. His ability to dominate Tecmo Bowl reminds us all of the true value of destroying your closest friends in competition and never letting them hear the end of it. That is what the Bo Knows Fantasy Football League is all about.

2024 Season:

Season XV kept the same twelve teams and gave us the most dramatic redemption arc in recent league history. The Bunnies had gone 1-13 and lost the toilet bowl in both 2022 and 2023. The Rusty Narwhals were defending their first title, while Pumaskulls were coming off another Bo Bowl appearance.

The regular season produced two 11-3 teams. TGIF had the league’s best record and 1,887 points per game, while the Bunnies matched the record and scored 1,856.9 per game, but somehow neither made the Bo Bowl. Narwhals went 8-6, Pumaskulls went 8-6, and the bracket gave both another chance to ruin the obvious storyline.

Bunnies beat OCTO, then beat TGIF. Narwhals beat Boomers, then beat Pumaskulls. That set up a final between the team defending its first title and the team that had spent two years losing everything. Bunnies beat Narwhals 231.68-156.82 in the Bo Bowl. Brett went from two straight 1-13 seasons to champion, which is probably the largest single-season reversal this league has produced.

The toilet bowl was Shelbyville Shittysauruses against Philadelphia Shenanihads. Shenanihads lost 147.32-157.06 and finished last at 7-7. Shittysauruses had finished fourth in 2023, so this was a much less impressive sequel.

2023 Season:

Season XIV saw the return of all the same teams, and all eyes were on 2022 champion Butthole Surfers, and if they could repeat. Could Rusty Narwhals could recover from their 3-11 collapse? Could Pumaskulls could finally find a championship run after repeated deep playoff appearances.

The league did return to Joshua Tree with a bang and celebrated JustinFest 2099.

The early season belonged to the Narwhals. The midseason story was a 6-0 start from a three-time champion, but the final standings belonged to Pumaskulls at 10-4, TGIF at 9-5, and three teams at 8-6. Narwhals finished 8-6 with the league’s highest scoring average, while Black Market Bakers fell from third in 2022 to 2-12. The league had plenty of points and very little stability.

The postseason finally gave Janah the payoff. Narwhals beat Shittysauruses, then beat TGIF, while Pumaskulls handled Nibblonians to reach the final. Narwhals beat Pumaskulls 253.84-186.01 in the Bo Bowl for their first championship. That was a massive reversal from the 2022 3-11 season. Pumaskulls reached their fifth final but became a repeat runner-up, while the 2022 champion Surfers did not make the final this time.

At the bottom, Black Market Bakers finished 2-12. The Fluffy Bunnies lost their second toilet bowl in a row to the Narwhals and finished 1-13 for the second straight season.

2022 Season:

In Season XIII we returned to an in-person draft for the first time since COVID. Palm Desert brought brutal heat and even more brutal kegstands, but the passion for competition and pool-beers was stronger than ever. We played sloshball for the final time in the intense California heat. Will the beloved draft sport return again someday, perhaps when daytime temperatures are more reasonable? Only time will tell…

Robert returned under a new name with Black Market Bakers after Wholelotta Smoke’s one-season run in 2018. He replaced Matt and team Mega Shark, who finished their Bo Knows run with a record of 62-72. This season Surfers were chasing a third championship, Boomers were defending their 13-1 title run, and Pumaskulls were trying to get back to another final.

Atoms briefly opened the season as the top team, which made the early power rankings look like a historical joke waiting to happen. Shittysauruses later took over the top spot, while Black Market Bakers finished 11-3 and Surfers went 10-4. Four teams finished with at least eight wins, and the middle of the league was packed with teams that could score enough to be dangerous.

The playoffs belonged to the old champion. Black Market Bakers beat Shenanihads in the semifinal, while Surfers handled Shittysauruses. Surfers then beat Shenanihads 159.10-127.51 in the Bo Bowl. Ryan earned his third championship, joining the 2017 and 2019 titles. The Surfers joined the Pumaskulls as the only three-time champions in the history of the league, solidifying their place amongst the greatest Bo Knows franchises. The 2021 1-13 collapse looks much more like a bad interruption than the beginning of a new era.

The toilet bowl went to the Fluffy Bunnies, who lost to the Rusty Narwhals 163.41-139.50. Bunnies finished 1-13 and lost their first toilet bowl, while Narwhals avoided a second straight last-place finish after going 3-11 in 2022. Atoms finished ninth at 7-7, a much more respectable landing after two straight last-place seasons.

2021 Season:

Season XII kept the same twelve teams, but the league found a new power center. Boomers returned to the top after finishing seventh in 2020, while the defending champion Pumaskulls tried to hold off a field that included a revived Shenanihads and a dangerous Narwhals team.

Boomers did not leave much suspense in the regular season. They went 13-1, won 13 straight games, and led the league by a mile in total points. Pumaskulls finished 10-4, Shenanihads and Shittysauruses both went 9-5, and OCTO and the Narwhals both finished 8-6. The league was competitive behind Boomers, but the race for first was already over.

The playoffs finally gave the rest of the league a chance. Pumaskulls beat Shittysauruses, OCTO beat Narwhals, and Boomers handled OCTO in the semifinal. Pumaskulls then edged Shenanihads to reach the final. Boomers beat Pumaskulls 187.07-147.40 in the Bo Bowl, finishing the season with the league’s first 13-win record and a championship to match it.

At the other end, Surfers went 1-13 in the most dramatic title-defense collapse in league history. Springfield Atoms were only slightly better at 2-12 and lost their fifth toilet bowl to TGIF 123.00-158.16. Springfield Atoms finished last for the second straight season, while Surfers at least had the consolation of not being the worst team in the league.

2020 Season:

Season XI was finally free of team changes! The biggest change was the balance of power. Butthole Surfers were defending their second title, Mega Shark was coming off a 12-1 regular season, and Pumaskulls were trying to recover from a 4-9 championship hangover. Due to the global pandemic, we weren’t able to draft this year, ending a six year tradition. That didn’t stop us from getting together though:

d

TGIF owned the regular season at 10-3, with 1,959.84 points and the league’s highest weekly average. Four teams finished with at least eight wins, and the playoff race stayed open long enough for every team except Atoms to remain alive late in the season. Atoms were the exception, becoming the league’s designated mathematical problem while everyone else argued over playoff odds.

Pumaskulls entered the playoffs at 8-5, beat Shittysauruses in the first round, then knocked out TGIF in the semifinal. OCTO beat Surfers to reach the other side of the bracket.

Pumaskulls met Giant Octopus in the Bo Bowl for the third time, and for the third time came away with the win – 189.37-101.38. TGIF had the best record, but Pumaskulls had the best month that mattered.

The consolation ladder was less kind to Atoms. They finished 4-9 with the league’s lowest scoring total and a minus 16.9 differential. Atoms lost their fourth toilet bowl to Mega Shark 70.00-149.87 and finished in last place. Mega Shark had gone from a 12-1 runner-up in 2019 to 4-9 and eleventh, so the collapse was shared, but Atoms still got the official bottom slot.

2019 Season:

After one season, Wholelotta Smoke departed and Janah joined with her Rusty Narwhals. The rest of the league was focused on more important business: Mega Shark was coming off a 9-4 rebound, Butthole Surfers were trying to reclaim the title they won in 2017, and Pumaskulls were defending the 2018 championship. We stayed close this year with a big house in Temecula, but weren’t able to re-create the magic of slosh ball from the previous draft.

Mega Shark made the regular season look simple. They finished 12-1, led the league with 2,129.96 points, and carried a nine-game winning streak into the playoffs. Surfers were almost as good at 11-2, while Boomers and TGIF both went 9-4. That put four teams at nine wins or better, which was bad news for anyone hoping the season would stay normal.

The postseason delivered the matchup it had been building toward. TGIF and Boomers won their first-round games, Mega Shark handled TGIF in the semifinal, and Surfers beat Boomers to get back to the Bo Bowl. Surfers then beat Mega Shark 158.27-118.79 for their second championship in three seasons. Ryan went from 7-6 and a first-round exit in 2018 to 11-2 and a title. Mega Shark went from last place in 2017 to the league’s best record in 2019, then picked the worst possible week to score 118.79 points.

Pumaskulls followed their championship with a 4-9 season, while Shittysauruses went 2-11 and still finished seventh by winning the consolation ladder. The actual last-place fight belonged to Shenanihads, who lost the toilet bowl to Atoms 173.16-85.46. Shenanihads finished 3-10, had a minus 21.7 differential, and left Season X with a seven-game losing streak.

2018 Season:

Season IX saw Robot Unicorn leave the league after back-to-back consolation seasons, with Robert taking over his slot, managing a new team: Wholelotta Smoke. The league rented a swazy mansion in Big Bear, and played the greatest games of slosh ball that have ever been witnessed.

The regular season belonged to OCTO. At 11-2, they led the league with 2,336.03 points, a 179.7-point weekly average, and a plus 59.2 differential. That was not just first place. It was a regular-season demolition. Mega Shark completed its own reversal from 3-10 and last place to 9-4 and a first-round bye. Pumaskulls also went 9-4, while Wholelotta Smoke, Surfers, and Bunnies rounded out the expanded playoff field.

The postseason had other ideas. Wholelotta Smoke knocked out Surfers, Pumaskulls beat Bunnies, and then Pumaskulls eliminated Mega Shark in the semifinal. OCTO handled Wholelotta Smoke to reach the final, but Pumaskulls won the Bo Bowl 172.47-163.35. Austin turned a third seed and the league’s fifth-highest scoring total into a second title, while OCTO got the full punishment for making the season look too easy.

The bottom was a three-way 3-10 mess between Boomers, Shenanihads, and Atoms. Atoms had the lowest scoring total, the worst point differential, and the final consolation loss. Shenanihads beat Atoms 141.24-119.74 in the toilet bowl, leaving Atoms as the 2018 toilet bowl loser, and their third Toilet Bowl title. After finishing tenth in 2017, the only direction left was down, and they found it.

2017 Season:

Season VIII saw two owner changes: The Songbirds were gone after two seasons, replaced by Lucinda’s Nibblonians, and Mega Shark returned with Matt at the helm. The league also expanded the playoff field to six teams, which gave us byes for the division winners and more teams to disappoint in December. We rented a humungous cabin in Big Bear, and took full advantage of volleyball equipment.

Pumaskulls took the top seed at 10-3, despite finishing eighth in points. That was a remarkable run of timing and defense, right up until it met the Nibblonians in the semifinal. Nibblonians had entered the league as a new team, then got hot at exactly the right time to reach the Bo Bowl. The defending champion Shittysauruses also made another playoff run, but Butthole Surfers ended it in the semifinal.

Butthole Surfers finished 9-4, led the league in scoring, made a whopping 55 moves, and beat Nibblonians 116.64-104.71 in the Bo Bowl. Nibblonians finished second in their first season, setting a high bar for the years to come.

At the bottom, Mega Shark returned at 3-10 with the league’s lowest scoring total and a minus 21.6 point differential. The toilet bowl ended with Atoms beating Mega Shark 98.03-85.45, leaving Mega Shark’s return season in the toilet.

2016 Season:

Season VII kept the league at twelve teams, but the old Nerf Herders were out, and Ryan’s Butthole Surfers were in. The season started with draft regrets, big trades, FAAB betting, and the self-declared Year of the Big Dick.

Four teams finished 9-5, and Atoms were the most convincing of the lot with a league-leading 1,655.48 points, a 118.2 weekly average, and a plus 14.1 differential. They sat atop the power rankings all season, so the semifinal loss to Boomers was extra painful. Boomers had scored above average in seven of their first nine weeks, then lost two straight late before bouncing back to reach the Bo Bowl.

Shittysauruses took the other semifinal over Butthole Surfers, then turned the Bo Bowl into a statement with a 147.35-103.45 win over Boomers. They were not the scoring leader or top seed, but they were the team that survived the crowded 9-5 mess and finished the work. Atoms recovered to take third.

The defending champion Robot went from 10-4 and a title in 2015 to 4-10 and a negative 21.0 point differential. The title defense collapsed early. OCTO also finished 4-10, but at least had 50 moves to show for the wreckage. Macho Men took the toilet bowl crown nobody wants, finishing last at 5-9 after losing the final toilet bowl matchup to OCTO 96.78-89.40.

2015 Season:

Season VI began with a Vegas draft and a brand new website. Mega Shark left, and Columbia Songbirds ran by David took their place. The league also returned to division-heavy scheduling after the 2014 experiment, raised the buy-in to $100, and allowed FAAB to be included in trades. The four team playoff, WR/TE slot, snake draft, and return-yard scoring survived the annual rules debate.

The Bunnies put together the regular season to beat, going 11-3 while scoring a league-high 1,797.82 points. They had the best record, the most points, and a plus 16.9 point differential. They were the deserved regular-season king, until TGIF ended their plan with a punch to the face, 151.70-125.96 in the semifinal.

Robot finished 10-4, took down Pumaskulls, then handled TGIF 141.66-121.88 in the Bo Bowl. It was a deserved title for the league’s second-best regular-season team. TGIF gets credit for a 7-7 season that turned into a Bunnies upset and a title-game appearance, but Robot was the team that actually finished the job.

Shittysauruses was a midseason force, which makes their 6-8 finish even more impressively self-inflicted. OCTO was the inverse: third in points but 5-9, a season-long argument that scoring well is not the same thing as winning. Atoms could occasionally win when they had no business doing so, but the season ended where it belonged. They lost the final toilet bowl matchup to OCTO 124.26-55.04 and took last place at 5-9, giving up 119.4 points per game.

2014 Season:

We have to figure out new and exciting ways to shake up the league each year, and this season we decided to switch the RB/WR/TE flex spot back to a RB/WR flex, and add a WR/TE flex to expand rosters. To balance the depth, we also try out adding points for return yards this season. Justin dug in even deeper with the stats this year and started putting together week to week win percentages, as well as the all-knowing PLAYOFF MACHINE.

2014-11-12 11_15_24-RStudio

Two amazing records this season by Pumaskulls and Boomers, each hitting 11 wins, where it had only been done twice in the history of the league. They obviously both made playoffs as well as a respectable 9-5 record by Giant Octopus. The big surprise of this season was Nerf Herders sneaking into the playoffs with a 8-6 record and only having a .2% chance of making playoffs with two weeks left in the season. Not only would they sneak in, but they would become the first ever two time champ and back to back champ. Reign of terror indeed.

2013 Season:

Time to get even more serious right? This year we had half-a-point PPR and a FAAB style waiver system. This is also the year we start recording our very own league podcast. This season was also the beginning of the reign of terror, but we’ll talk about that later. Pre-season meetings helped us get organized, but we quickly discovered way too many fun things about Google Hangouts.

Screen shot 2012-08-12 at 11.27.05 AM

Very little trading this year as we begin to distrust each other (only 3 trades!), and a very tight race to the playoffs with 10 out of 12 teams hovering between 6 and 8 wins. Big time shake up as the Atoms and Nerf Herders make their very first playoff appearences, while TGIF makes it three in a row, and Macho Men make it their second season with 11 wins. Macho Men can’t catch a break and is eliminated along with TGIF. Nerf Herders and Atoms combine to make the most pathetic Bo Bowl of all time, with the champion only out-scoring two other teams that week (besides his opponent). Nerf Herders emerged victorious after finishing in dead last the year before, and thus beginning their reign of terror.

2012 Season:

The greatest season in Bo Knows history. The year where the commissioner started the season 0-4, and then went on a 10 game winning streak, and then blew straight through the playoffs and took the Bo Knows Championship (sorry about the spoilers). Not very many changes from the 2011 season, but we did more from a WR/RB flex to a RB/WR/TE flex and finally got rid of the god awful two-week long playoff format. We also started keeping detailed statistics about each team this year, and even have some detailed write-ups from the mid-season, and right before playoffs. This is also the year where Austin made everyone some kick-ass team logos.

Round one of the playoffs featured a re-match of the 2011 Bo Bowl, as well as a second playoff appearance by Giant Octopus, and a first time appearance by Robot Unicorn.

2011 Season:

What an epic sophomore season. No excuses this year, and we made sure to go big with the offline, in person draft with a real life draft board. Not only that, but we expanded out and added two more teams. The Lucky Leprechauns unfortunately left, but we added The Annexation of Puerto Rico (now Macho Men), Scruffy Looking Nerf Herders, and the Fluffy Bunnies. We learned from some of our mistakes (switch to a decimal system) but didn’t learn from others (still two week long playoffs going all the way through week 17). Much more trading in the second season, with a league-leading eleven trades made by the commissioner. The stakes were taken even higher when there was a week nine bet between the Boomers and Giant Octopus, where the winner would receive the top running back from the other team.

Boomers went big that week and went away with a free Ray Rice, Giant Octopus’ #1 pick.

loss

Boomers went on to go the playoffs along with Shittysauruses, TGIF, and a league-leading 11-2 Annexation of Puerto Rico (now known as the Randy Savage Macho Men). Shitty and TGIF went on to the Bo Bowl with TGIF emerging victorious.

2010 Season:

Our inaugural season, the first one was a rollercoaster. 10 teams total, and slightly smaller rosters, we were all just trying to find our footing. We didn’t use decimal scoring, and it was a pre-PPR wasteland. We had a horrible 13 week schedule, with 2 weeks of playoffs and championship. You read that right, week 16-17 championship. The two founders of the league met in the Bo Bowl, and the Dreadmetal Pumaskulls were crowned the leagues very first CHAMP. The first pick that year? Chris Johnson (LOL). The second pick? Adrian Peterson (somethings never change). Here’s how the season shook out:
