Team of the Week – Mega Shark

Week 5 is here, which means its time for another Team of the Week Spotlight. Last time we looked at the reigning Champion Surfers, this week we catch a glimpse inside last year’s runner-up, Mega Shark.

As one of the ten original teams who competed in the Bo Knows inaugural season, Mega Shark’s history under manager Matt Phillips is as old as the league itself. MEGA had a tough going in the early years, averaging just over 5 wins a year for Matt’s first 5 seasons. After a 2-year hiatus during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, Matt returned to the league as a last minute fill in after Mike Cox’s Macho Men withdrew from the league just before the start of the 2017 season. Bo Knows Season 8 proved to be the worst season yet for Mega Shark (3 wins), but better days were ahead for Matt’s squad.

In 2018, Mega Shark put up their best season yet, winning a franchise record 9 games on the way to securing their first ever playoff spot and a first-round bye. Matt would go on to lose to the eventual champion Pumaskulls, but MEGA was far from done with their resurgence. In 2019, Matt came back with a vengeance, winning a Bo Knows record 12 games and locking down the #1 overall seed in his second playoff appearance in a row. This time MEGA would make their first ever Bo Bowl, but a down week in the final kept them from achieving that ultimate goal.

Still, the league has been put on notice. Mega Shark is back, and in a big way. Since the 2018 season (and including the first 4 weeks of 2020), no team has won more games than Mega Shark (Matt has racked up 23 wins, with OCTO and the Surfers in a tie for second with 19 wins a piece).

Will Mega Shark make it to the playoffs three times in a row, finally taking that last step to claim the Bo Bowl trophy?

  1. Wow, Surfers only win so far this season was from Mega Sharks. When those two step out onto the field Mega is just a fish out water.
